About the NavePoint VP-2U

A 2U vented panel fills larger open spaces in your rack while maintaining airflow for thermal management. Use it when you have a 2U gap between equipment that does not warrant a rack drawer or additional gear. The vented design prevents your rack from becoming a sealed box that traps heat, which is especially important in road cases with limited natural ventilation.

A vented blank panel is one of those items that shows up in mature, well-thought-out rigs and is conspicuously absent from the ones that run hot and cause problems mid-show. The NavePoint VP-2U fills a 2U gap in your rack without sealing off airflow the way a solid blank panel would. It does nothing active — no power, no signal — but it does something important: it keeps your rack from behaving like a closed box. When gear at the bottom is pulling in cool air and exhausting heat upward, every unsealed gap in the rack path matters.

At 5mm deep and half a kilogram, this panel is essentially a placeholder with ventilation slots cut into it. In a road case or enclosed tour rack, dead air is warm air, and warm air sitting against your amp, wireless receivers, or IEM transmitters is the slow accumulation of risk you notice only when something throttles or fails at the worst possible moment. A 2U open gap with no panel is marginally better for airflow but invites cable clutter and road debris. This panel splits the difference — it keeps the bay tidy and organized while still letting air move.

If you have a legitimate 2U gap between pieces of gear and you're not filling it with a drawer or a spare unit, this is the right call. It costs $16 and it's the kind of decision that reflects how seriously you take thermal management. That said, if your gap is only 1U, this doesn't help — size your blanks to your gaps. And if you're running an open-frame rack with natural convection on all sides, the thermal argument matters less, though the cable management and debris-blocking arguments still apply.

In the rack

  • Place this between high-heat producers — like a transmitter or power amp — and gear that's sensitive to elevated operating temperatures, so you're not stacking a heat source directly against a wireless receiver with no buffer.
  • In a fly rig or checked road case, run a quick post-transit check that the panel hasn't shifted or popped loose — a rattling blank inside a sealed case can be the mystery noise that takes ten minutes to diagnose at load-in.
  • If your rack layout changes and this gap closes, pull the panel out and store it; a solid object rattling loose in a rack mid-show is worse than the gap it was filling.
  • Mark the panel with a strip of gaffers tape and a sharpie note ('future wireless rx' or 'cable reserve') if the gap is intentional — it saves confusion when someone else is troubleshooting your rig.
