Rack-Mounting a Mac mini or Mac Studio for Playback

A 2024 Mac mini is too tall for 1U and a Mac Studio too tall for 2U. Sizes, weights, power and heat for putting either one in a playback rack.

A Mac in the rack beats a laptop on a stand: nothing to knock over, nothing to close by accident, and the cables stay plugged in between shows. The catch is height. Neither current desktop Mac fits the rack space people assume it does.

The short answer

  • Mac mini (2024): 5.0 cm tall, so lying flat it needs a 2U shelf, not 1U. Two fit side by side on one shelf.
  • Mac Studio (2025): 9.5 cm tall, so lying flat it needs 3U, not 2U.
  • Either one: leave air around it. Apple rates both for 10 to 35 °C, and a closed rack case in a summer load-in can pass that.

Size and weight, from Apple

Figure 1. The two desktop Macs. Neither fits the rack space people assume it does.

Mac mini (2024, M4 and M4 Pro)

12.7 cm square and 5.0 cm tall. 0.67 kg with the M4, 0.73 kg with the M4 Pro. Maximum continuous power is 155W. Two USB-C ports and a headphone jack on the front, which is handy in a rack: the front ports are the ones you can reach when the back is buried in cables.

Mac Studio (2025, M4 Max and M3 Ultra)

19.7 cm square and 9.5 cm tall. 2.74 kg with the M4 Max, 3.64 kg with the M3 Ultra. Maximum continuous power is 480W. Two front USB-C ports on the M4 Max (Thunderbolt 5 on the M3 Ultra) and an SD card slot.

The rack unit math

Explore in 3DApple Mac miniThe 2024 Mac mini, 5.0 cm tall.Gear page ›

One rack unit is 44.45 mm. Two is 88.9 mm. Three is 133.35 mm.

  • Mac mini flat: 50 mm tall. Over 1U by about 5 mm, so it takes a 2U shelf. The older, thinner Mac mini did fit 1U. The 2024 model doesn’t.
  • Mac mini on its side: 127 mm tall. 3U.
  • Mac Studio flat: 95 mm tall. Over 2U by about 6 mm, so 3U.
  • Width: a 19-inch rack’s opening is wide enough for two Mac minis side by side, or one Mac Studio with room for a small switch or interface next to it.

A purpose-built Mac mount can be shallower or hold the Mac on edge, but check the mount’s own rack height against these figures rather than the old Mac mini’s.

Power and heat

Apple’s maximum continuous figures, 155W for the mini and 480W for the Studio, are ceilings, not what a playback session draws. Plan the circuit against the ceiling anyway; see rack power planning. Heat is the bigger risk. Both Macs pull air in and push it out, and both are rated to 35 °C ambient. Don’t stack a Mac directly on a power amp or under a transmitter tray with no gap, and open the rear lid of the case for the show.

Two Macs for redundancy

Two Mac minis on one 2U shelf is the compact way to build an A/B playback rig: same size, same weight, one rack space pair. The switching and the interface options are covered in redundant playback rigs, and for picking the interface between the Mac and the console, see MOTU M4, M6 or UltraLite-mk5.

Preamps

Figure 2. The preamps and outputs live on the interface, not the Mac.

A Mac has no mic preamps that belong in a live rig; its built-in audio is a headphone jack. Every input and output in a playback rig comes from the audio interface, so the preamp count, gain range and phantom power all live on that box. The Mac’s rig impact is rack space, one outlet, heat, and USB or Thunderbolt to the interface.
