About the iConnectivity mio XL

The iConnectivity mio XL is a professional MIDI router and interface with 16 MIDI ports (10 DIN + 6 USB), Ethernet MIDI for long cable runs, and an advanced routing matrix that maps any input to any output. In complex playback rigs with multiple MIDI-controlled devices (lights, click, patch changes, IEM mixing), a dedicated MIDI router prevents conflicts and makes troubleshooting straightforward. The Ethernet MIDI capability eliminates the 50-foot limitation of standard MIDI cables.

The mio XL is a dedicated MIDI router and interface that sits in a 1U rack slot and acts as the central nervous system for any rig where more than a handful of devices need to talk to each other. Five DIN-style TRS inputs and five outputs give you ten traditional MIDI ports in a format that plays nicely with standard 1/8-to-5-pin adapters, while three USB Host ports let you connect class-compliant USB MIDI devices — controllers, pedalboards, expression controllers — directly without a computer in the middle. An Ethernet port extends MIDI across a network, removing the 50-foot ceiling that has always made long cable runs a headache on larger stages.

In practice, what makes the mio XL worth its rack space is the routing matrix. Instead of physically daisy-chaining patch bays and hoping MIDI clock doesn't bleed where it shouldn't, you configure exactly which input ports talk to which outputs — click track to in-ear monitor mixer only, patch changes to amp modeler only, timecode to lighting only. At 5 watts nominal draw, it's essentially invisible to your power budget, and at 165mm deep it fits comfortably in a shallow touring rack. The USB Device port means a laptop or tablet can still sit upstream and manage the whole routing map if you want software control at soundcheck.

This box makes sense if you're running a playback rig with three or more MIDI destinations, or any IEM rig where a wireless system, a console, and an effects unit all need synchronized control without stepping on each other. If you have one keyboard and one synth, it's overkill — a simpler two-port interface will do the job for a fraction of the price. But for a working tour where the show file needs to be bulletproof and a tech needs to be able to troubleshoot a MIDI routing problem in a dark wing at 7:45pm, the mio XL earns its slot.

In the rack

  • Build and save named routing presets for each show configuration — if a substituting tech has to step in, a clearly labeled preset beats trying to trace a daisy-chain mid-show.
  • Use the Ethernet port for any MIDI run longer than 30 feet to FOH or a stage-left keyboard rig; a standard CAT6 cable is far more reliable over distance than a long TRS MIDI run.
  • When connecting USB MIDI pedalboards or controllers to the Host ports, label the physical USB cables at both ends immediately after config — three identical black USB-A cables in a dark rack are indistinguishable under pressure.
  • Keep the mio XL away from the bottom of the rack where power supplies and amplifiers radiate heat; at only 1 kg it can sit near the top without affecting the rack's center of gravity.
