About the Shure QLXD4

The Shure QLXD4 is the half-rack, single-channel sibling to the ULXD4 line — same Shure digital audio quality, but one channel at a time and no native Dante. Popular on house-of-worship and mid-scale theatre rigs where analog outputs to a stage-box channel are the norm. Pair two in a 1U shelf for a dual-receiver half-width fit.

The QLXD4 is Shure's half-rack, single-channel digital wireless receiver — the leaner sibling to the ULXD4, occupying half a rack unit when paired in a 1U mounting shelf. It handles one transmitter at a time and puts that signal out as analog audio, either via XLR or quarter-inch. That makes it the right tool for rigs where you're feeding discrete channels into a stagebox or a console's local inputs rather than routing audio over a network. House-of-worship setups, mid-size theatre rigs, and corporate tour packages with a handful of wireless channels are the natural home here.

At 10 watts nominal draw with a 14-watt ceiling, two of these in a shelf barely register on your conditioner. The 295mm depth is worth noting — that's nearly a foot of chassis behind the rack ears, so shallow touring cases won't work. Ethernet control means you can integrate it into Shure Wireless Workbench or WWB6 for frequency coordination and remote gain, which matters when your wireless rack is behind a curtain or halfway across a stage. The analog-only outputs are the real operational constraint: every channel needs a discrete physical cable run back to the console. Plan your snake real estate accordingly.

If you're running two to four wireless channels on a predictable, site-specific install or a stable touring package that doesn't need networked audio, the QLXD4 is a sensible, cost-effective choice. If you're scaling past four channels, need Dante or AES67, or want to consolidate audio over a single Cat6 run, step up to the ULXD4 or ULXD4D — the infrastructure savings will outweigh the price difference quickly. Similarly, if you need two channels in one half-rack slot rather than two, look at the QLXD4D dual-channel variant before committing to a shelf build.

In the rack

  • Use a Shure SHR-RACK1U half-rack mounting shelf to pair two QLXD4s in a single rack unit — buy the shelf before load-in, not the night of.
  • Run antenna distribution (like a Shure UA844+SWB) upstream of your QLXD4s rather than relying on the onboard BNC inputs with passive whips; the QLXD4's front-panel antennas are convenient for bench use, not for a racked show rig.
  • Connect the Ethernet port to a dedicated control switch on your rig's network and use Wireless Workbench to pre-coordinate frequencies before doors — remote gain trim from FOH during soundcheck saves you a stage walk every time a transmitter gets swapped.
  • Budget one stagebox channel per receiver and label the XLR tail at the receiver end and the stagebox end before the cable gets buried — analog-only systems have no self-documentation, and six identical black cables look identical at 1 a.m. strike.
