About the Behringer X32

The full-size Behringer X32 brings 32 Midas-designed mic preamps and 16 XLR outputs onto the console itself, eliminating the need for a stage box on small-to-mid stages. Two AES50 ports still let you hang DL or S-series stage boxes when the rig grows. The 25-bus engine delivers a healthy supply of independent IEM mixes, and Ultranet runs to P-16 personal mixers off a single Cat5 to the stage. A long-running workhorse of monitor world for budget-conscious productions.

The X32 is the console that made professional-grade digital mixing accessible at a price point where it genuinely changed how touring and regional production gets staffed and budgeted. It sits at the center of a monitor rig or FOH position as the primary mixing surface — 32 Midas-designed mic preamps onboard, 16 analog XLR outputs, and a 25-bus engine that gives you enough independent mixes to cover a full IEM-heavy stage without immediately reaching for expansion hardware. This is not a rack unit in the traditional sense; it lives on a console stand or work surface and gets bolted into road cases, not rack rails.

Those 32 local preamps mean you can run a modest production without a stage box at all, which changes load-in dramatically — one multicore snake from stage to FOH and you are operational. When the rig grows, the two AES50 ports each carry 48 channels bidirectionally, so adding a DL32 or S16 stage box slots in cleanly. The Ultranet output runs up to 16 channels of personal monitor audio directly to Behringer P-16 personal mixers over a single Cat5, keeping that infrastructure lean and self-contained. At 100 watts nominal draw and a 130-watt maximum, it is a light load for your power conditioning. The 20.5 kg weight and 525 mm depth are real considerations when spec'ing a road case.

Pick the X32 if you are running budget-to-mid-tier touring, regional theatre, or a house-of-worship install where the channel count and bus depth are right and the price ceiling is firm. The Midas preamp heritage punches above what the price tag suggests. Where it gets harder to justify is on a dedicated IEM rack: this console wants to be your mixing surface, not a rackmounted processor, and the form factor reflects that. Engineers who need a compact, purpose-built monitor rack with a remote-controllable engine at its heart will often find the X32 Rack or a dedicated personal monitor system a better fit than the full console stuffed awkwardly behind the stage.

In the rack

  • If you are running the X32 as a dedicated monitor console, assign your IEM mixes to buses 1–16 and route them out the 16 local XLR outputs so everything patches without a stage box — saves a trunk cable and an AES50 hop on smaller shows.
  • The Ethernet remote port lets you run X32-Edit from a laptop or tablet at artist position during soundcheck; put the console on a dedicated switch and keep that network isolated from the venue's house network to avoid control dropouts mid-show.
  • Use AES50 A for your primary stage box and leave AES50 B free as a spare port or a second stage box when you expand — patching both from the same Cat5 run is a common mistake that costs you redundancy.
  • Road-case the X32 with the meter bridge folded and the faders protected; at 20.5 kg and 525 mm deep it needs a properly fitted case with a pull-out work surface, not a generic ATA box with loose padding.
