About the Furman M-8x2

The Furman M-8x2 is the most affordable rack-mount power conditioner in Furman's lineup, providing basic surge protection and EMI/RFI filtering across eight rear-panel outlets. It lacks the pull-out rack lights and voltage meters of its siblings, but for budget builds or secondary racks where you just need clean, protected power distribution, it gets the job done at the lowest possible cost. A sensible starting point for any rack build.

The M-8x2 is Furman's entry point into rack power — a 1U conditioner that takes a single NEMA 5-15 feed and distributes it across eight rear-panel outlets with surge protection and EMI/RFI filtering baked in. In an IEM rack or playback rig, its job is straightforward: give every unit in the rack a clean, protected place to plug in without running a daisy-chain of power strips through the back. It won't impress anyone on a spec sheet, but reliable power distribution is the thing you only notice when it's missing.

At 15 amps across eight outlets, the M-8x2 has enough headroom for a typical IEM or playback rack where most units draw modest power — wireless receivers, a personal mixer, a small switch, maybe a Mac Mini. The shallow 210mm depth fits easily in compact tour-style racks. What you're giving up compared to pricier Furman models is real: there's no front-panel voltmeter to catch a bad venue feed, no pull-out work lights, and no advanced Series Multi-Stage Protection. The filtering is basic. If you're pulling from a sketchy generator or working venues with genuinely dirty power, you'll want something higher in the lineup.

The M-8x2 makes the most sense in a secondary or rehearsal rack, a broadcast or streaming cart, or any build where budget discipline matters more than premium filtration — say, a fly-date IEM pack where you're supplementing a known-good house feed. Touring engineers who hit a new building every night and have seen what a voltage sag can do to a show should step up to a Furman with a proper voltmeter at minimum. But for a locked-in corporate residency, a rehearsal studio rack, or a monitor world where another conditioner is already upstream, the M-8x2 earns its place without argument.

In the rack

  • Put it at the bottom of the rack — it has no front-panel display to read, so prime eye-level real estate is wasted on it; save that space for your wireless or mixer.
  • Count your outlet load before you wire up: eight outlets sounds like plenty until a tech patches in a laptop charger and a phone brick 'just for a second' — label the outlets and assign them at build time.
  • Because there's no voltage meter, carry a cheap plug-in voltage tester or use your phone's audio interface to spot-check the house feed before power-up in unfamiliar venues.
  • At 210mm deep it clears most shallow rack bags with room to spare — if you're building a fly pack around a 16-inch-deep bag rack, confirm your deepest unit, not this one, is the depth constraint.
